What is the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)?
The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) is funded by the Commonwealth Government's Department of Health. The program is a government basic-needs home support program that assists Australians over the age of 65 (or 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples) who wish to remain at home but require additional assistance such as household help, meal preparation or delivery, personal care, and transportation. The services are subsidized by the government and come at a low cost to you. CHSP is used when you require low-level assistance. If the complexity of your needs grows, you may be referred for a Home Care Package.
Sunshine Disabilities and Home Care Services’s CHSP services include:
- Domestic Assistance
- Flexible Respite
- Home Maintenance
- Group Social Support
Is CHSP funding available to me?
If you meet the following criteria, you may be eligible for CHSP funding:
- Have difficulty performing everyday tasks without assistance.
- Need assistance living independently in the community.
And are:
- 65 years and older
- 50 years of age or older and identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- Aged 50 or over (45 for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people), low income, homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
-
CHSP's primary goals are to provide the following:
- To provide basic assistance to people who can, for the most part, manage on their own.
- To assist people in becoming more self-sufficient at home and in the community.
- to keep people as long as possible in their own homes and communities
- To encourage community involvement while also providing a sense of purpose and personal confidence.

What exactly is a Regional Assessment Service?
To begin receiving CHSP funding, a RAS (Regional Assessment Service) trained professional will come to your home and help you identify and assess which services are needed to support you and can be funded through the CHSP. Typically, one to two entry-level services are provided. Each time you want to use a different service under this program, you may need a new assessment. If you have any additional questions about home care services or require assistance at any stage of the process, please contact us at 1300 112 709 and one of our helpful Customer Care Coordinators will gladly assist you.
